What is a virtual private network?

A VPN, or virtual private network, builds an encrypted path between your device and the internet. Traffic leaves through a remote server. Sites see that server’s IP, not the one your ISP assigned.

Every browse leaves a trail that advertisers, networks, and sometimes agencies can follow. A VPN will not make you invisible, but it is one of the simplest ways to hide your IP address, lock down public Wi-Fi, and reach pages that are blocked where you sit.

Some services also offer a static or dedicated IP for remote access or hosting. Encryption still applies on shared café networks, where the hotspot itself is often wide open.

Understanding the basics

A VPN is a private network overlaid on a public one. Your device opens a tunnel to a provider’s server. Data is encrypted in that tunnel, then the server forwards it to the wider web. Your original IP and location are replaced by the server’s.

Remote access is what most people mean by “a VPN”: an app on your laptop that tunnels to a company or consumer service. Site-to-site links routers so two offices share files as if they were on one LAN. Mobile VPNs keep the tunnel alive when a phone hops from LTE to Wi-Fi.

Open Wi-Fi is shared. Government and carrier monitoring exists even when nobody is “after you.” ISPs can log and, in some places, monetize traffic metadata. A home connection is not a cloak.   • Security — modern protocols, a kill switch, DNS leak protection, and a published no-logs policy you can actually read.
  • Speed — encryption adds a hop. A wide server list usually hurts less than a cheap overloaded node.
  • Locations — you only need the countries you actually use.

Free can mean throttled data, few countries, weak encryption, or a business model that resells your session. Paid services more often include unlimited data, audited no-logs claims, and live support. Limitations

Encryption and distance can slow you down. Some streaming apps block known VPN ranges. A VPN is legal in many places and banned or limited in others. Pick a nearby server for speed, or another country when you are trying to reach a region-locked site.

What a VPN cannot do

It will not save you from phishing, bad downloads, reused passwords, or links in texts that pretend to be your bank. It does not hide the account you log into, the files you install, or what you type into a site after you arrive. Keep the VPN on as a layer. Still go to official sites yourself. Still skip surprise attachments.

Does a VPN change your IP?
Yes. Traffic appears to come from the VPN server you chose. That is the whole point of hide-my-IP use.
Should the VPN stay on?
For public Wi-Fi and private browsing, leave it on. Turn it off only if a bank or office network breaks and you accept the exposure.
Does it drain battery or slow Wi-Fi?
Encryption uses power and an extra hop. A decent paid app is usually milder than a free overloaded one. Speeds can drop; they do not have to collapse.
Can you use a VPN on a smart TV?
Most TVs have no VPN app. Put the VPN on the router or share a hotspot from a phone or PC that is already tunneled.
What does a VPN not hide?
Logged-in accounts, cookies you keep, files you download, and anything you publish. It hides your ISP IP from the sites you visit, not your whole life.
Are there risks?
